A talk by Regina Shrimpton

In her second talk on fakes, will explore fake prints and fake paintings. She will start with Dürer, possibly the best printmaker during the German Renaissance, and the prolific copying of his works during his lifetime. Then we will stroll through fake modern prints by Picasso, Dalí, Lowry, Matisse… Who is the most faked printmaker from western Modern Art? As for paintings, we will examine examples of the greatest painters and their fakers. One of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers paintings was the world’s most expensive painting in 1987, but experts still do not agree on its authenticity. Was Monet´s work ever faked? And how about the Mona Lisa? How far have art fakes infiltrated the art market? And what can we do to avoid being taken in by fraudsters? An art scandal in 1916 centred around the provenance of the painting Judith Beheading Holofernes by Caravaggio

If you are interested in art - either creating it or copying it, this is a talk not to be missed.

There is no charge for the talks nor is there a need to book. We ask for voluntary monetary contributions to help run our Association (Algarve History Association) and any surplus is donated to a number of different charities.
