Review of the Concert by Nicola Meeuswen on 11 December 20

A review by Peter Kingdon Booker

On Sunday 11 December, Algarve History Association hosted the fourth concert of the 2016-17 season. Our Dutch performer was 14 year old Nikola Meeuwsen, who gave an astonishingly mature performance for an audience which included many students of the Regional Conservatory in Faro. Nikola began with Bach´s Partita no 2 (BWV826) and the first half of the recital was completed with Clementi´s Sonata (op 50 no 3). The second half began with Mendelssohn´s Variations Sérieuses and was followed by two of Schubert´s songs arranged for piano by Liszt (Auf dem Wasser and Ständchen) Nikola ended his programme with three Chopin pieces Études (op 10 nos 3 and 4) and his Ballade no 3. Nothing daunted by this intense programme, Nikola embarked on a difficult encore, Prokofiev´s Suggestion Diabolique, which he completed with great aplomb. One audience member, a concert pianist herself, declared that Nikola is already a world class virtuoso. She commented that not only does Nikola have technical mastery of the keyboard, but that he also demonstrated that he has an emotional connection with the music. Nikola´s performance embraced piano music from the 17th to the 20th centuries, some achievement for one so young. Algarve History Association is proud to have sponsored an international star of the future on his first international performance here in the Algarve.
